2016-2017 Volunteer of the Year

Rolly has been volunteering with JA of Southern Nevada since 2010.

During the past 7 years, Rolly has volunteered at numerous JA in a Days and Finance Park Days.

Rolly has gone above and beyond during this past school year and we would like to recognize him for all the hard work that he has done teaching and promoting JA of Southern Nevada.

What do you find most rewarding about your role as a JA volunteer?

What I find most rewarding as a JA volunteer is knowing I can help make a difference in our community and in a child’s life.

What was a particularly rewarding lesson you have taught as a JA Volunteer?

I love volunteering at finance park. My favorite part of the lesson is when you get to help the students budget their money. Hearing the students talk about all the materialistic stuff they want to buy like nice cars, designer clothes and a big house really opens my eyes on how important teaching to budget really is, especially if your a single parent or have two children and a job that doesn’t pay much.

Please share your favorite JA story.

Before I started teaching my curriculum, I remember asking my 5th grade class “What do you want to after you graduate high school?” I heard a lot of great answers like go to college to become a doctor, a teacher, a lawyer but two answers stood out to me, one student said “work at the casino and be a cook”, another student said “work housekeeping in a hotel” and then I asked why? Their answers; because my dad is a cook and my mom is a housekeeper.

Once I was done teaching them about being an entrepreneur. I asked the question again. “What do you want to do after high school?” The one student that wanted to be a cook answered “I want to go to college so I can own my own business one day and be my own boss” and the other student said a housekeeper.

I’m not saying it’s wrong to be a cook or a housekeeper. I mean, if that’s your passion then go for it. What I am saying is, if these students only know by what they see then it is up to us to educate them on why it’s important to further their education.

If I can inspire at least one student to understand there’s more to life then what they see, then I’ve done my job as a volunteer. 

2017 Summer Updates

Before summer 2017 officially ends and school gets back into full swing, JA of Southern Nevada wants to recognize the hard work our volunteers accomplished during this short summer.

We had two summer programs this year where we educated over 70 students with the help of 18 volunteers.

Our first summer program was a partnership between JA of Southern Nevada and three Nevada HAND properties where our volunteers taught students from Kindergarten to 8th Grade over the course of three weeks.

Our second summer program had volunteers from Barclaycard teaching It’s My Business to middle school students at John C. Kish Boys and Girls Club where the top three teams will go on to compete in a Shark Tank style competition against students from B. Mahlon Brown Academy of International Studies.

These students worked in teams to come up with innovative products within five different categories: Technology, Animals, Food & Drink, Apps, and Clothing. Bringing these ideas to life required the students to make a prototype and to come up with a pitch to sell their product to investors. During the final lessons, all the teams presented their pitch to a panel of Barclaycard volunteers. The First place team created an innovative product in clothing, Second place created their product with technology in mind, and the Third place team created a product for animals.

These volunteers have helped us rebuild over 30+ kits!

We will have regularly scheduled kit building days for the 2017-2018 school year, this schedule will be released once the school year gets into full swing.

Ed Cassidy is Vice President, Marketing of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada’s largest and most widely read news and information source in the state of Nevada, northern Arizona, and southern Utah. He is also responsible for marketing initiatives of the Review-Journal’s strong portfolio of print and digital niche products, including the monthly Luxury Las Vegas magazine; the weekly Spanish language newspaper El Tiempo; and, the weekly Las Vegas Business Press.

Prior to joining the Las Vegas-Review-Journal in 2015, Cassidy held the positions of Vice President, Communications and Event Marketing for USA TODAY; marketing director posts with the St. Petersburg Times (aka Tampa Bay Times) and the Tennessean and Nashville Banner; and was editor and publisher of the city magazine Honolulu.

Before joining the news publishing industry, Cassidy handled publicity and promotion for more than 140 feature film releases for such studios as 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and Columbia/SpectraFilm. He is past president of the Newspaper Association of America’s marketing federation; a member of the BrainReserve national trend trust; and a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science, the Broadway League, and CMO Council.
